WW1 Project

This year, we are working with a plethora of local partners to commemorate the end of The Great War (1918) with a WW1 in Haringey and Islington through Stories & Songs project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. We have been working with musicians Patricia Hammond (mezzo) and Matt Redman (multi-instrumentalist), who specialise in researching songs of the Great War, as well as reaching out to the local community for personal stories in order to put together this programme of free workshops and concerts.

Stroud Green Festival Artistic Director and writer Clare Norburn will be presenting the local stories from a first person narrative perspective which will be read out by actor Patience Tomlinson alongside popular songs of the period performed by Patricia and Matt.

Here is a short film about the project including the story of Corporal Thomas Uren, a W1 soldier from Islington and what we think is the first modern performance of his song Bravo Islington! We're grateful to Islington Council Heritage Team who unearthed Bravo Islington! from their archive.

Do you have a family story to share about local experiences in WW1 in Haringey and Islington? Contact steph@stroudgreenfestival.org.uk to discover how you can share and record your story as part of our project.
