“I absolutely cannot do without music. It is a necessity of life to me.” Jane Austen put these words in the mouth of social climber Mrs Elton in Emma, but Jane too loved music. She played the piano every day and compiled her own albums of music, which form the basis for the musical choices in this concert – by Gluck, Mozart, Arne, Charles Dibdin, Pleyel, Stephen Storace and Samuel Howard.

Music is often at the centre of many scenes of social gatherings and balls in Jane’s novels – so this programme combines the music she knew, played and loved with some favourite extracts from her books.
